PE Coated Wire Rope Overview

PE coated wire rope, also known as polyethylene-coated wire rope, consists of a galvanized steel wire-rope core covered with an extruded polyethylene protective layer. It is primarily supplied in medium and large diameters for engineering, industrial and outdoor cable applications.

The galvanized wire-rope core provides the required mechanical strength, while the PE coating forms a smooth, low-water-absorption barrier around the rope. This outer layer helps reduce direct exposure to moisture, dirt and certain chemicals and prevents direct contact between the galvanized steel surface and surrounding components. The coating does not contribute to the rope’s rated breaking load.

Guangtong Metal supplies PE-coated galvanized wire rope in constructions including 6×7, 6×19 and 6×36, with FC, IWRC and other specified core options. The steel-core diameter, finished coated diameter, coating thickness, tensile grade, lay direction, color and reel length can be customized according to project requirements.

For outdoor installations, UV-stabilized PE coating is available upon request. Depending on the required color and exposure conditions, the formulation may incorporate carbon black, UV stabilizers and antioxidants to improve resistance to sunlight and weathering. Standard PE should not automatically be considered UV resistant; UV performance must be confirmed against the agreed raw-material specification or weathering-test requirements.

PE-coated wire rope is commonly considered for outdoor engineering cable systems, industrial restraint and guide cables, agricultural structures, marine and aquaculture equipment, barrier systems and other large-diameter protective cable assemblies. Final product selection should be based on the required breaking load, construction, installation method, environmental exposure and applicable project standard.

Advantages of PE Coating

Polyethylene has low water absorption and good resistance to moisture and many common chemicals. These properties make it suitable for the protective coating of galvanized steel wire rope used in engineering and outdoor environments.

Key advantages include:

  • Low water absorption
  • Good resistance to moisture
  • Smooth and continuous protective surface
  • Suitable for medium- and large-diameter wire ropes
  • Additional protection for the galvanized steel surface
  • Reduced direct contact with surrounding components
  • Resistance to many common acids, alkalis and chemical solutions
  • Multiple colors for identification and project coordination
  • Custom coating thickness and finished diameter
  • UV-stabilized formulations available upon request
  • Suitable for long continuous reel lengths
  • Custom production according to drawings and project specifications

The coating provides supplementary surface protection. It does not replace the zinc coating on the steel wires or eliminate the need to select an appropriate galvanized finish for the operating environment.

Galvanized Steel Wire Rope Core

Galvanized steel wire rope is commonly used as the load-bearing core of PE-coated engineering cable. The steel wires provide mechanical strength, while the zinc layer helps protect the steel against corrosion.

The PE coating creates an additional barrier around the galvanized rope. This combination is useful where the cable may be exposed to moisture, dirt, surface contact or outdoor conditions.

The required galvanized finish should be selected according to:

  • Operating environment
  • Expected corrosion exposure
  • Applicable product standard
  • Required service life
  • Inspection and documentation requirements

Any cut ends, damaged coating areas or exposed termination sections may require additional corrosion protection according to the installation specification.

Available Wire Rope Constructions

6×7 Construction

The 6×7 construction contains relatively large individual wires. It provides good resistance to external abrasion but has lower flexibility than constructions containing a larger number of smaller wires.

It is generally more suitable for static installations, guide cables and applications involving limited bending.

6×19 Construction

The 6×19 construction provides a practical balance between flexibility, strength and resistance to external wear.

It can be considered for general industrial and engineering applications where moderate bending and reliable mechanical performance are required.

6×36 Construction

The 6×36 construction contains more individual wires and generally provides greater flexibility than 6×7 and many 6×19 constructions.

It may be selected for applications involving bending, drums or sheaves. The correct sheave or drum diameter must be determined according to the rope construction, diameter and operating conditions.

Custom Constructions

Other constructions can be supplied according to the customer’s drawing, project standard and technical requirements.

Construction selection should consider:

  • Required minimum breaking load
  • Flexibility
  • External abrasion
  • Bending frequency
  • Drum or sheave diameter
  • Resistance to crushing
  • Installation method
  • Operating environment

Rope Core Options

Depending on the selected construction and project requirements, PE-coated wire rope can be supplied with different core types.

Fiber Core

A fiber core (FC) can provide good flexibility and help retain lubricant within the wire rope. It generally produces a lighter and more flexible rope than a comparable steel-core construction.

Independent Wire Rope Core

An independent wire rope core (IWRC) provides additional metallic strength and improved resistance to crushing. It is commonly considered for demanding industrial applications.

Other Core Types

Wire strand cores and other specified core constructions may be available according to the rope design and applicable standard.

Core selection should be based on the required strength, flexibility, crushing resistance, temperature and installation conditions.

Diameter and Coating Specification

PE-coated wire rope must be specified using two different diameters:

  1. Galvanized steel wire-rope core diameter
  2. Finished outside diameter after PE coating

For example:

10 mm galvanized wire rope coated to 12 mm

This means that the galvanized steel wire-rope core has a nominal diameter of 10 mm and the completed PE-coated cable has an approximate outside diameter of 12 mm.

When requesting a quotation, both dimensions should be stated clearly. A description such as “12 mm PE coated wire rope” may be unclear because it does not indicate whether 12 mm refers to the steel core or the finished coated diameter.

Custom combinations can be manufactured according to:

  • Steel-core diameter
  • Finished coated diameter
  • Minimum coating thickness
  • Diameter tolerance
  • Required breaking load
  • Installation dimensions
  • Production quantity

The PE coating is not a load-bearing component and must not be included when calculating the metallic cross-sectional area or breaking load.

Outdoor and UV-Stabilized PE Coating

Standard PE coating should not automatically be described as UV resistant. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet radiation can cause an unstabilized polymer to fade, harden, crack or lose mechanical properties.

For outdoor engineering applications, Guangtong Metal can supply UV-stabilized PE coating upon request. Depending on the required color and environmental conditions, the coating formulation may incorporate:

  • Carbon black
  • UV absorbers
  • HALS light stabilizers
  • Antioxidants
  • Weather-resistant color masterbatch

Black PE is commonly selected for outdoor cable jackets because a properly formulated and uniformly dispersed carbon-black system can improve resistance to ultraviolet degradation.

White, transparent and colored PE coatings require a suitable stabilization system because they cannot rely on black pigmentation for UV protection.

Actual outdoor durability depends on:

  • PE grade and formulation
  • Type and concentration of stabilizers
  • Pigment dispersion
  • Coating thickness
  • Geographic location
  • Sunlight intensity
  • Temperature and humidity
  • Chemical or salt exposure
  • Mechanical wear
  • Installation conditions

Where UV performance is a contractual requirement, the raw-material grade, test method, exposure cycle and acceptance criteria should be agreed before production.

Chemical and Moisture Resistance

PE has low water absorption and provides resistance to many common acids, alkalis and aqueous chemical solutions. This makes it suitable for protective cable coatings in wet and selected chemically exposed environments.

However, chemical compatibility must be evaluated for the actual service conditions. The customer should provide the following information when chemical resistance is important:

  • Chemical name
  • Concentration
  • Exposure temperature
  • Continuous or intermittent contact
  • Expected exposure duration
  • Presence of mechanical stress

Compatibility should be confirmed before using PE-coated wire rope around oils, fuels, solvents, concentrated chemicals or high-temperature liquids.

Typical Engineering Applications

Depending on the selected construction, diameter, tensile grade and PE formulation, PE-coated galvanized wire rope can be considered for:

  • Outdoor engineering cable systems
  • Industrial restraint and guide cables
  • Large-diameter protective cable assemblies
  • Agricultural and greenhouse support systems
  • Marine and port equipment
  • Aquaculture and marine farming systems
  • Mining and heavy industrial equipment
  • Barrier and perimeter cable systems
  • Transmission and control cable assemblies
  • Structural protection systems
  • Custom OEM engineering cables

Application suitability depends on the complete system, including the steel wire rope, coating, fittings, anchoring method, operating load and environmental exposure.

For lifting, suspension or other safety-critical applications, the complete assembly must be designed and assessed according to the applicable engineering standards. PE coating alone does not make a wire rope suitable for lifting.

PE Coating Color Options

PE coating can be produced in different colors for identification, safety marking and coordination with surrounding structures.

Available options may include:

  • Black
  • White
  • Red
  • Blue
  • Green
  • Yellow
  • Orange
  • Custom project colors

When exact color matching is required, customers should provide a physical sample, RAL reference or Pantone reference.

Color alone does not prove UV resistance. Black or colored coatings must still use an appropriate formulation and meet any agreed weathering requirements.

  • Core type
  • Lay direction and lay length
  • Breaking-load testing
  • Galvanized coating inspection
  • PE coating adhesion
  • Cable length
  • Reel and packaging inspection

If UV resistance is required, the test standard, exposure conditions, duration and acceptance criteria should be agreed before production.

Minimum breaking load is not the same as working load limit. The working load and safety factor must be determined according to the complete system and applicable engineering requirements.

Handling and Installation

Correct handling helps prevent damage to the PE coating and the internal galvanized wire rope.

Recommended practices include:

  • Use correctly sized rollers and installation guides.
  • Avoid dragging the rope across sharp or abrasive surfaces.
  • Do not use clamps that cut or excessively compress the coating.
  • Avoid kinking, twisting and uncontrolled unreeling.
  • Protect the coating from welding sparks and open flames.
  • Use a reel suitable for the rope diameter and length.
  • Inspect the coating before and after installation.
  • Follow the approved method for repairing damaged coating.
  • Protect exposed ends and termination areas against corrosion.

Before installation, reels should be stored in a dry, ventilated location away from excessive heat, chemicals and unnecessary sunlight.
